legacy
In 2010 a group of frustrated parents came together to address the lack of field space for young athletes in Washington, DC. This group formed the nonprofit organization, Capitol Riverside Youth Sports Park. You know them today as Go Play.
Capitol Hill Little League, Sports on the Hill, and Washington Capital United quickly became our three founding youth organizations. They were soon after joined by DC Fray, District Sports, Washington Area Frisbee Club, Living Classrooms and DC SCORES.
Go Play’s vision grew as it engaged with the community around the RFK stadium. We developed a communal vision of how this unused parcel of asphalt could be activated for community use. Our vision was one of green waterfront space that would be a gathering place for youth and adult sports.
When Events DC began construction of The Fields at RFK in November 2018 they also began their search for an operator of the facility. We knew that we were the best suited for the job and were awarded the contract. Our carefully curated vision was finally realized with the opening of The Fields in June 2019.
Since then The Fields complex has alleviated overcrowding on nearby fields by making the area a destination for those who want to exercise, enjoy the waterfront, bike, or hike on Kingman Island. Reclaiming this area as usable space also helped solve the storm water runoff issues associated with the existing parking lots.
Go Play continues to employ its advocacy and design skills in the identification of and advocacy for new areas in the city for play spaces.
